One child on holiday is a project. Two under three? That’s project management with soft toys. It can be wonderful if you accept that your days look different than before and you hold on to one anchor: rest for everyone comes before seeing everything.
One shared reset per day
Baby and toddler rarely nap in sync. Aim for one block back at the room: lunch, bottle or feed, quiet. The toddler can have “rest time” with books or a short show while the baby sleeps. Or swap: a short walk with the toddler while the other stays in the stroller or with the other parent. You don’t have to do it all at once.
Stay with space and a kitchen
An apartment or family suite with a separate sleep spot, a fridge and ideally a washing machine saves you whole suitcases of clothes. A safe play corner in the room lets you sit down while the toddler plays and the baby rests. Request a cot and a travel cot or bassinet ahead, and ask the hotel to confirm they’ve reserved them.
Gear: double where needed, smart where you can
Two sets of nappies, wipes and spare clothes in hand luggage. One shared “on-the-go” bag with snacks, toy rotation and medication. A carrier for the smallest plus a compact stroller for the toddler (or the reverse, depending on who wants to walk) often works best. Agree at home who handles whom at boarding: one parent takes the baby, the other the toddler. You can swap later; improvising at the gate is harder.
Days with one main ingredient
Morning: one activity (beach hour, playground, a gentle zoo intro). Afternoon: back to base. Late afternoon: ice cream or a short outing. Evening: early dinner. More agenda than this invites stereo meltdowns. A backup plan (rain, too hot, too tired) on your phone prevents roadside debates.
Direct flights and extra time
Choose a direct flight where you can and a generous connection buffer. Pre-boarding is logistics, so take it. And yes: day one is allowed to be boring. Unpack, explore the room, sleep early. You’re starting a holiday that works.
