Taking grandma and grandpa on holiday: why it's a great idea

Your toddler waves at a stranger, the suitcase gaps open, and you wonder who packed the sunscreen. Now picture grandpa sitting on the lid to close it while grandma already has your child on her lap. That is the charm of a holiday with grandparents.

Extra hands

With a toddler, every airport looks twice as big. Grandpa pushes the stroller, grandma keeps the snack bag within reach, and you eat a hot meal for the first time in months. On the beach, at the pool and on the walk to dinner, one more adult helps more than any travel gadget.

Date nights and trusted babysitting

Few things beat an evening for two without searching for a sitter. Grandma knows the bedtime songs and grandpa knows the potty routine. You know your child sleeps safely, so you stroll to that little place by the harbour with an easy mind. Candlelight and grown-up conversation feel like luxury after a year of toddler life.

Memories

Your child builds a sandcastle with grandpa and learns a song in another language from grandma. You will still talk about it in twenty years. Grandparents enjoy it too: they watch their grandchild discover, laugh and sometimes fall asleep on their shoulder. A photo with three generations in one frame will hang on a wall for years.

Splitting costs

Many families agree on the split before they book. Some grandparents treat the family to the stay, others share the rent of a villa or pay for the outings. No standard rule exists. Talk about it openly before you book, and you avoid awkward moments on the trip.

Tips for a smooth trip

  • Own space. Choose separate rooms, or a villa or resort with connecting rooms. Grandparents sleep in, your toddler wakes you at six, and everyone stays cheerful.
  • Different rhythms. Your toddler wants a nap at half past eleven and grandma wants lunch at half past eleven. Plan a quiet moment in the afternoon and let the grandparents take an outing of their own.
  • Agree on expectations. Talk before you leave about bedtimes, sweets, screen time and who babysits when. Say kindly what you prefer. Ask the grandparents what they want.
  • Leave some air. Do not fill every day. A free morning at the pool often beats a third excursion.
