“Family friendly” on the website sounds lovely. Until you arrive and discover the kids’ club starts at six, the “shallow pool” comes up to your waist, and the room is a half-hour walk from everything. With a toddler you want something else: short distances, calm corners and low friction.
Short walks always win
Pick a compact resort or a place where room, breakfast, pool and beach sit close together. Every extra metre with a stroller, beach bag and sleeping toddler costs energy you’d rather spend on ice cream. A short airport transfer often matters more than half an extra star.
Sleep first, splash later
Check that the resort has a cot for you and has reserved it, not “maybe on the day”. Blackout curtains, a quieter wing and a lift or ground-floor room make bedtime easier. A mini-fridge for milk and snacks is gold.
Water on a toddler scale
Ask how deep the kids’ pool is. A splash pad or very shallow basin is often better for toddlers than a big “kids pool” where older children dive. Look for shade by the water: an umbrella or covered area saves you sunburn and meltdowns.
Food without the circus
Flexible buffet hours, high chairs and simple late snacks make mealtimes easier. All-inclusive can be lovely with a toddler because you carry fewer bags around, as long as the grounds aren’t huge and you can find quiet corners.
Kids’ club? Check the age
Many clubs only start at three, four or even five. Good to know before you book so expectations stay honest. For toddlers what counts most is a play corner, shallow water and enough room to nap in your room.
Ask concrete questions
Get answers in writing about the cot, pool depth, distance to the beach, laundry and whether balconies are child-safe. Vague replies (“that usually works out”) are a cue to dig deeper or choose differently.
